Septic tank systems on unsewered properties

There are requirements for installing and managing septic tank systems on residential properties.

What are wastewater treatment systems?

When a house cannot connect to the main sewer, sewage (water from toilets, kitchens, showers, etc.) must be treated and contained on the property. A wastewater treatment system is installed in the ground and uses bacteria to break down solids, grease, and fats. This system does not purify sewage; instead, it reduces the volume of solids and prepares sewage for disposal. If you are installing or making any changes to a septic tank system, you must first apply to the Council for a permit.
