The Swan Hill Town Hall improves accessibility

Swan Hill Rural City Council is excited to inform the community that the accessible toilet at the Swan Hill Town Hall is, this week, undergoing upgrades that will meet industry-best standards.

Based on feedback from community members, Council Project Officers have reconfigured the accessible toilet on the ground floor of the Town Hall. The toilet is now independent of other toilets, and the floor space has been increased to provide greater turning room for wheelchairs and prams.

Director of Community and Cultural Services, Bruce Myers is thrilled to announce these improvements, which were initiated by the community, for the community.

"We were fortunate to receive some constructive feedback from community members about their concerns when using the accessible toilet at the Town Hall,” said Mr Myers

"We're confident that this accessible toilet is not only a vast improvement on what was previously there, but also addresses the issues that our patrons were experiencing," he added.

Local resident, Maureen Hewitt contacted Council after using the accessible toilets at the Town Hall about the challenges she faced when using the accessible toilet, in particular the location.

"I was also concerned about parents with prams having to use the accessible toilet. There wasn't a lot of room in this area," explained Miss Hewitt.

"Inclusion and participation is vitally important to Council," Mr Myers went on to say.

“Our two performing arts centres in Swan Hill and Robinvale offer a variety of events and shows, and we want the whole community to be able to attend and enjoy them,” he added.

The accessible toilet is now conveniently located in a separate area before the entrance to the main hall. The upgrade is set to be completed by mid-July.
