As the weather warms up Swan Hill Rural City Council is reminding residents to stay vigilant with increased snake activity expected across the region. This time of year, snakes become more active as they seek food, water, and mates, often bringing them into closer contact with humans.
Council CEO, Scott Barber is urging the community to take precautions to stay safe and avoid unnecessary encounters.
"Snakes are an important part of our ecosystem, but it’s essential to respect their space and take steps to reduce risks.
“Residents are encouraged to stay alert in grassy, bushy, or wetland areas and avoid walking through long grass where visibility is reduced.
“Keeping properties clear of woodpiles, rubbish, or dense vegetation can help reduce the likelihood of snakes seeking shelter nearby.
“Food sources such as pet food should be kept indoors and stored in sealed containers to avoid attracting rodents, which are a common prey for snakes.
“When working outdoors, wearing sturdy boots and long pants provides additional protection, and children should be taught to avoid snakes and report sightings immediately to an adult,” Mr Barber said.
Mr Barber said if you encounter a snake, do not attempt to catch or harm it, instead, maintain a safe distance.
