Green Waste

Swan Hill Rural City Council continues its annual free green waste disposal weekend for residents at the Swan Hill and Robinvale landfills.

Residents will be able to dispose of green waste free of charge at the Swan Hill Landfill on Saturday, 26 October and Sunday, 27 October, and at Robinvale Landfill on Sunday, 27 October.

Council’s Director Infrastructure, Leah Johnston explained that the free green waste disposal weekend has been run by Council for many years, and following the success of last year's free green waste weekend, Council was pleased to continue to offer the service to residents again this year.

“An impressive 322 residents took advantage of the opportunity to dispose of their green waste for free. It was great to see so many residents supporting this initiative.”

Ms Johnston noted that the free green waste weekend is an ideal time for residents to tidy their yards in preparation for the warmer weather.

“We're fast approaching the fire season, and taking advantage of Council's free green waste weekend is a good reason for residents to prune their trees and clear long grass from around their properties ahead of the hotter months,” Ms Johnston said.

Materials that would be accepted over the free green waste weekend include small tree pruning’s (up to 75mm in diameter), garden clippings, grass and leaf litter.

Green waste taken to the landfills is mulched and used as garden cover around the municipality and is also available for residents to self-load free of charge.

“Recycling green waste through this initiative offers significant environmental benefits,

“When green waste decomposes in landfills it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By diverting this organic material from landfills, we reduce these harmful emissions. By supporting this initiative, we can all contribute to a healthier environment.” Ms Johnston added.

The Swan Hill Landfill will be open 9am-2pm on Saturday 26 October and 9am-4pm on Sunday 27 October.

Robinvale Landfill will be open 9am-3pm on Sunday 27 October.

Please note this free green waste weekend is for residents of the Swan Hill Rural City Council municipality only and residential volume limits will apply. Commercially generated green waste will incur normal gate fees.
