Swan Hill Rural City Council is once again giving Swan Hill residents the chance to microchip and register their pet for free – a saving of up to $200!

This is a great opportunity for pet owners to save money on something that is required by law. A microchip provides pets with a permanent form of identification which can quickly reunite owners with lost or injured pets.

Sessions are being held at the Swan Hill and Robinvale pound facilities throughout the month of May and include free animal registration up to April 10, 2026.

Book in for a free microchip

Council’s Regulatory Services Coordinator Trish Ficarra highlighted the importance of microchipping.

“A microchip is one of the quickest and easiest ways owners can be reunited with their beloved four legged family member” Ms Ficarra said.

When a lost or stray pet is handed in or picked up by Council Rangers, their microchip number can be scanned and cross-referenced with Council’s animal registration database to obtain their owner’s details”.

“Bookings are essential for this free initiative, which is part of council’s commitment to promoting responsible pet ownership.”

“There are limited spots so make your booking as soon as possible so you don’t miss out on this great opportunity”.

It is a legal requirement that all cats and dogs born after 1 July 2020 are required to have a source number prior to being microchipped.

Your pet’s breeder should be able to provide you with the source number. You can also register for a source number online with Animal Welfare Victoria.

Ms Ficarra said appointments could not be accepted if a source number was not supplied for any pet born after 1 July 2020.

There is a limit of two free microchips per household and kittens and puppies must be at least eight weeks old.
