Swan Hill Rural City Council is thrilled to announce the commencement of registrations of interest for the much-anticipated 2025 Yamagata Student Exchange program.

Council’s Mayor Cr Stuart King said the initiative offered an unparalleled opportunity for secondary school students, living in Swan Hill, to immerse themselves in a cultural exchange experience like no other.

“I had the absolute pleasure to participate in the original Swan Hill – Yamagata student exchange in 1986. Since then, I have had family members participate in the student exchange and I wholeheartedly recommend this program,” he said.

Cr King said students had the unique chance to be paired with a student from Yamagata for a home-stay opportunity, spending approximately 10 days in each other's families’ homes, alternating between Yamagata and Swan Hill.

“During this exchange, students will delve into the heart of everyday life, gaining insights into local customs, traditions, and educational systems.

“Students will attend local schools, participating in group activities, official receptions, and experience a variety of excursions such as visits to facilities, farms, a mountain hostel, a seaside resort, and iconic landmarks in Tokyo, including a day at Tokyo Disneyland,” he said.

Applications for the 2025 Yamagata Student Exchange are open to secondary students in Year 8 and above, who reside in Swan Hill.

Cr King encouraged local students to join with Council in embracing the spirit of cultural exchange and fostering international friendships.

Interested families are encouraged to apply by the application deadline, Friday, 19 July 2024.
