Author Cathy Hope to visit the Swan Hill Regional Library

Author, Cathy Hope to visit Swan Hill Regional Library Local residents have the chance to meet renowned author Cathy Hope at the Swan Hill Regional Library on Monday 2 September 2024 at 2pm.

Cathy will talk about her 30th book, and her debut children’s novel, Murray River Girl.

Murray River Girl is a true story about a girl named Roma.

Roma was born on 25 April 1934, and she grew up in a makeshift tent on the banks of the Murray River at Coomealla in New South Wales until 1945.

The Murray River wasn't just a geographical feature to Roma; it was her life, inspiration, and source of joy as she spent her days freely exploring the riverbank and bush.

Swan Hill Rural City Council’s Library Manager, Camille Cullinan, is eagerly anticipating Cathy's visit to explore Murray River Girl, which unfolds during a challenging period in Australian history.

"The narrative takes place against the backdrop of the Great Depression, polio outbreak, and the realities of World War Two," she said.

“We’re expecting Roma’s story to resonate deeply with those who grew up during this era.  Our afternoon with Cathy will be a special opportunity for many to stroll down memory lane.”

“We will have Murray River Girl available to purchase on the day at the library for $20 each and Cathy will be available to sign books,” said Ms Cullinan
