I want to personally thank the local football, netball, rugby, cricket and basketball clubs for working with us on the Recreation Reserves Masterplan.
The masterplan will provide Council with a costed, prioritised and achievable 10-year plan for the future development of nine recreation reserves across the municipality.
We met with representatives from Robinvale clubs recently to discuss Riverside Park. They each came with priorities for their clubs and I want to thank them for putting in the time and effort to come up with these ideas.
We will come back to the group soon once these priorities have been put into the same format as we have for other recreation reserves around the municipality.
The next step is to get Council approval for the overall plan, and then start the search for funding to make the top priorities happen.
Congratulations Australia Day winners
It was great to present three Australia Day awards to recognise individuals and groups for their contributions to our community.
Swan Hill’s Laura Smith was announced as Citizen of the Year. Laura has been a Friends of the Pioneer Settlement member since 1989, and has been instrumental in the Friends donating more than $1 million to the Settlement and the community – what an amazing achievement.
Natya’s Eden Zanker was announced as Young Citizen of the Year for her outstanding sporting achievements. She will join the Melbourne Football Club’s AFL women’s team after being selected at pick six in last year’s draft.
And, the 75th Anniversary of the Lake Boga Flying Boat Repair Depot was awarded the Community Event of the Year. Thousands of people headed to Lake Boga in March 2017 for a unique series of events to mark 75 years since the construction of the Flying Boat Depot. It was a wonderful event for Lake Boga, and a credit to the Lions Club and other community groups who made it happen.
Well done to each of these award winners, as well as to the school award winners who were also celebrated at the Swan Hill Australia Day breakfast and other events around our municipality.
Thanks to everyone who nominated someone in the awards this year – I encourage you to nominate worthy community members when the call goes out for the 2019 awards.
Robinvale Mayor/CEO visit
CEO John McLinden and I will visit Robinvale on Thursday, 8 February to meet with community members and discuss their ideas or concerns. To make a time to meet with us, please contact Sue Smythe on 5051 8009 or Sharon Lindsay on 5036 2348.
Nyah Road work begins again
Work on Nyah Road has started again, this time on the northbound lane. Whitfield Excavations are working between Stradbroke Avenue and George Street to completely re-build the road.
It’s important to remember that businesses along this stretch of road will be open during the work. The work has been separated into stages to ensure access – you can park your car close by and walk to the shops.
This section should be finished by mid-February. The next stage will be the northbound lane between George and Chapman streets.
I want to thank businesses, motorists and pedestrians for their patience as this work continues. Rest assured it will be worth it – once complete the road will be safer and more functional, and offer a more welcoming entrance to our city from the north.
Tennis Week almost here
More than 1500 people will be in Swan Hill from 11 to 16 February for Country Week Tennis, and I encourage you all to make them welcome.
The local tennis club has been working hard to prepare for the event – orgainsing the tournament and social events, working with sponsors, and improving the facilities.
Council staff have worked hard in recent months too, improving the turf on the soccer pitches that will be turned into tennis courts for the week. It is a great outcome for both Country Week and for our regular local soccer competition.
Of course, tennis week is about more than the tennis and you will notice Swan Hill come alive with social events throughout the week. I encourage you all to make visiting players feel welcome, and take this chance to show off what makes our region so great.
